Probiotics are often referred to as “the good bacteria” that live in our gut and help keep our digestive and immune system in tip top shape. Given the important role they have in optimal health, it’s possible you’ve considered giving probiotic supplements to your kiddo. And there certainly are no shortage options on the market today.

But does your kid really need a probiotic supplement? Keep reading to find out what the research says and for other ideas on how to give your kiddos the benefits of probiotics through food.

What exactly are probiotics and what do they do?

Probiotics are live microorganisms, like bacteria or yeast, that are meant to provide health benefits after being consumed in adequate amounts. Studies have shown there may be some benefits to taking probiotics for digestive issues including constipation, antibiotic-induced diarrhea and IBS [1]. While there has been a good amount of research on probiotics and different health conditions, there is still a lot we don’t know yet. For example, which types of bacteria may be most beneficial for certain health conditions.

Food sources of probiotics

It’s possible to get probiotics in the diet through food. They can be found in fermented foods such as yogurt (a kid favorite!), kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles and sourdough bread. The amount and types of probiotics found in each food varies.

Does my kid need a probiotic supplement?

So should you give a probiotic supplement to your kiddo? The answer really depends. If your kiddo eats a fairly varied diet and is in general good digestive help, chances are you won’t see a probiotic supplement have much impact. However, if your kiddo has digestive troubles such as constipation, diarrhea or IBS, it may be helpful to alleviate some of their symptoms. It’s best to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the right type and amount of probiotics to help your little one.

Summary

Probiotics are beneficial microorganisms that may help support digestive health. They can be found in fermented foods as well as in supplement form. It’s best to consult with a healthcare provider to determine if probiotics supplements may be right for your kiddo.
